PSALM 138

Today verses 1-3 “in the day that I cried, you answered me, and strengthened me with strength in my soul”

Psalm 138 is a well-known Psalm in the Hebrew Bible and Christian Old Testament. It is attributed to King David and is classified as a Psalm of Thanksgiving.

1 I will praise thee with my whole heart:

before the gods will I sing praise unto thee.

2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth:

for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

3 In the day when I cried thou answeredst me,

strengthenedst me with strength in my soul.

4 All the kings of the earth shall praise thee,

O Lord, when they hear the words of thy mouth.

5 Yea, they shall sing in the ways of the Lord:

for great is the glory of the Lord.

6 Though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly:

but the proud he knoweth afar off.

7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me:

thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me.

8 The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me:

thy mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.

 

Psalm 138 KJV is a powerful Psalm that teaches Christian leaders about the importance of hearing God and walking humbly before Him. Here are some points for a Bible study on this Psalm:

1. Acknowledging God’s faithfulness: In Psalm 138:1-3, the psalmist praises God for His faithfulness and steadfast love. As Christian leaders, we need to acknowledge and recognize God’s faithfulness in our lives, ministries, and the lives of those we serve. It is essential to cultivate a heart of gratitude and thanksgiving towards God for all His blessings.
2. The power of prayer: Psalm 138:3 states that God answered the psalmist’s prayers and gave him strength and confidence. Prayer is a vital aspect of the Christian leader’s life, and it is through prayer that we can hear God’s voice, receive guidance, and strength to carry out His will.

 

VERSES 1-3

VERSE 1 “I will praise thee with my whole heart: before the gods will I sing praise unto thee.

• TD point: “I will PRAISE thee”. The option is to look up to God, not to self or others or to life, the nightly news. (Heed Psalm 121 “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence comes my help, etc)).
• This means to look outwardly to praise, to give thanks, to focus on all of the good times, really good types of things in this world, despite the other big and tiny real matters. Bible “Give thanks in all things” (not meaning for all things, but despite) to keep our focus and our joy and have a quality of life.Main point: “I will praise thee with a WHOLE heart“. This means to do that with effort, even intensity, with your whole force, for you want to do that with a whole heart, not haphazardly, slack, or somewhat half-hearted, as that is a big sign of inner doubt, lack of true trust, even lack of mature understanding.

• Main point: I will choose willfully to do the above “before all of those little g gods” in this world or in my friends, in this life, the things which try to control my innermost thoughts, many of which try to wear at me, to “own” my soul, and fill my mind and make me feel hopeless, discouraged, or self-pity, also self-hate. The types of good things that can build up and depress, even want to make me lose my life, as these may cause big pressure and worry and fear to build up, to ruin my quality of real life.
• (Examples: making, having money, possessions, cars, houses, positions, income, relationships, cares of this world, keeping up with the Joneses, fear,  persons, needing employment, wanting more status, favor, even fame, etc.)

 

VERSE 2

“I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

Main Point: “I will worship toward thy holy temple.” I picture the mighty King David out on the battlefield, far from home, and the thought of his favorite worship spot comes to him. As an act of focus, he recalls the fond memories which edify and comfort his thinking. (Note: This is not “facing the fellowship” as any idolatry of having to do this, much less of facing any one spot). So David encourages himself and prays facing his favorite comforting church (temple).

Note: All of this is Dr. Taveau’s idea, not dogma, and surely not a law, and not for everyone. It’s simply a modern application “interesting idea.” (Furthermore, please do not make this into any legalistic required sort of teaching

Main point: “And I praise thy name for your lovingkindness and for your truth.” There we find the Psalm “Free to Focus” and choosing to do so willfully, fixating on the goodness of the Most High and wondrous God, recalling the times in his life when God showed him His lovingkindness and was there against all odds, in solid firm truth (miracles, healings, the enemies’ plans thwarted, etc.).

Main points: Now, in these days, while we ought to choose to do the above, today we have it easier. And while we each need to be like the Psalmist intentionally choosing to focus on the power and might of the Lord, rather than dwell deeply and continually upon our own many issues, complex problems. While we can exert our voice to praise and exalt and make the choice not to complain or murmur, still today we modern people can put on praise music!

MAIN POINT: “for you have magnified your word above your name” In Hebrew culture, a person’s name was considered very important and carried a great deal of significance. A name represented a person’s identity, character, and reputation. In fact, God’s name was so revered that it was considered too holy to be spoken aloud by some Jewish people, and they would use substitutes such as “Adonai” or “HaShem” (meaning “The Name”) instead.

So when the psalmist says that God has magnified His word above all His name, it is a profound statement about the importance of God’s word. The psalmist is essentially saying that God’s word is greater than His name, which is the very essence of His being.

This statement emphasizes the power and authority of God’s word. It suggests that God’s word is the ultimate expression of His character and nature, and that it carries even more weight and authority than His name. It also highlights the importance of Scripture in the life of the believer, as it is through the reading and study of God’s word that we come to know Him and understand His will for our lives.

 

ASIDE POINT: CHRIST, JESUS, GOD’S WORD MADE FLESH “And dwelt among us” This statement emphasizes the power and authority of God’s word. It suggests that God’s word is the ultimate expression of His character and nature, and that it carries even more weight and authority than His name. It also highlights the importance of Scripture in the life of the believer, as it is through the reading and study of God’s word that we come to know Him and understand His will for our lives.

In summary, the statement in Psalm 138:2 that God has magnified His word above all His name is a profound declaration of the importance and authority of God’s word, and it highlights the power and significance of Scripture in the life of the believer.

 

VERSE 3 “In the day when I cried thou answeredst me, and strengthenedst me with strength in my soul.

“TAVEAU TALK: Tennis Ball Analogy – We ask, we wait, and what goes on in the middle is God’s business. Then, one day, when it’s not too late, God answers back.”

“On the very day I cry out in need for our prayer, we need to picture “the request” (our supplication) like an invisible tennis ball which we volley into God’s court. And no matter how hard we hit it, it is now in God’s court. This means that we will have to wait for a time before God hits it back to us (meaning, we must wait for Him to lob it back in the form of a miracle, an answer to prayer, or a fulfilled word of prophecy). How we behave, whether maturely or immaturely, and a lot of other real reasons are God’s method of growing us up and teaching us more about Him, His caring nature, and about ministry. The expansion of each of our relationships set apart with Him.”

Main point: “I, you, or me cry out to the Lord, asking, begging, and imploring Him for an answer to a major prayer. At that moment, second, and day in which we call out and name the item, seeking help through believing prayer, Psalm 138:3 assures us that He hears and responds.

However, what follows is a mystery in the church, among ministers, and believers worldwide. Let us examine this through mature faith.

My own logic recognizes this as a process:

First, I call out to God in prayer, fully believing for myself that He is there and that He will answer. My own faith is needed to receive any answer, faith that I believe He is there and will listen, and faith that I believe He will answer.

Next, receiving the answer is seen as a mystery. However, it will come about due to His timing and methods, while He regards our faith, attitudes, soul conditions (mind, will, and emotions), and each heart’s staying power, willpower, and character. He appears to use the waiting time between “I ask for it” and “I have it in my grasp” as His safe, protective, maturing, strengthening, freeing, and overcoming period of time.

 “THE LONG WAIT BETWEEN I JUST PRAYED..AND “I HAVE THE ANSWER IN MY LIFE”

WE ADVISE THIS UNDERSTANDING: THERE WILL BE EVEN A MAJOR NEED FOR GOD’S STRENGTH

The longer the wait ..it’s character development, liberating and empowering but enigmatic big every fiery  even many years  of process

THE BASIC OVERVIEW “the well loved Son of his father,(Jacob) Israel and his favorite wife Rachel, was the favorite son of his father. It made the other brothers deeply jealous. For Joseph had a dream about his huge call. This triggered their deep insecurity, bad spirits, contentious anger and cruel spirit of jealousy, and the sold their own brother as a slave into Eqypt.

MY COMPARISON IS THAT WAITING FOR GOD TO ANSWER PRAYER IS THE SAME FAITH AS WAITING FOR PROPHECY..

MAJOR SLOW LANE…EYE OF THE TORTOISE (SEEMS NOAH LIKE) AND IT ALWAYS REQUIRES A SIMILAR “FAITH” AND “PATIENCE” ENLIGHTENED ” STAYING POWER”

Hebrews 6:12

“That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”

NOTE how this verse encourages believers to not be lazy or lackadaisical in their faith, but to follow the examples of those who have demonstrated faith and patience in order to receive the promises of God. It suggests that a combination of faith and patience is necessary in order to inherit these promises.

Joe’s example: As a young teen, Joseph received the word from the Lord about his destiny, but the devil also realized this and set up big assignments to try to undermine and destroy him. However, God was bigger!”

The mean Accusing Adversary also tried to defeat the young Joseph with his own closest relationships, his blood relatives, even his own brothers, all of them!

“Joseph was falsely accused in Egypt and demeaned as a slave in prison. He was falsely witnessed against, forgotten, and often deeply disappointed. It was the unwise devil’s repeated assaults to undermine and weaken him, mainly to break him and repeatedly break his heart, his true will, his mind, and his pure attitude, turning him against the matters of God. The devil aimed to make Joseph’s disposition hard, bitter, mean-spirited, and unforgiving, retaliatory, and cruel, even abusive toward others. The main goal was to make Joseph lose his faith in the Most High God and forfeit his major high destiny, which sadly, many others have also experienced.”

CONCLUSION: THE “WORD OF THE LORD “ came to Joseph according to PSALM 105 in his youth but which we note was between  THE TIME OF CALL (the  vision of his call)) and the final ANSWER (when he was walking is his destiny) was along timer period.

THIS IS WHAT I  WOULD CALL “THE WALKING IT IN AND OUT…ONGOING…YET  IN  THE PROCESS” which is at the same time milling, sifting, complicated and difficult-to-understand BIG LIFE making ‘tiny bits of both SMALL and GREAT pure progress”. He did not see any hope for many hurtful and extraordinarily treacherous, and unjustly accused, exceedingly difficult years!

(however MANY including this jokester self..have lived this way and are now living in an enduring LIFE IN THE PROCESS “encouraging from deep inside a firey furnace” like I have..

But I have lived it with “the eye on the prize” ETERNITY as we are just “passing through” this mortal veil…and the GOAL IS Jesus stepping to look you in the face and  say, “Well done, good and faithful servant,..ENTER INTO THE JOY OF THE LORD”

(this is similar to JESUS “who, for the JOY set before Him, endured the Cross”(as it’s mostly INVISIBLE and cannot be SEEN nor ATTAINED by the human eye, mind, desire or work” (for it is done by GRACE)

“Going through many battles yet keeping an eye on the prize in faith and patience is a similar concept to ‘seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.’ However, the peace of God’s Kingdom usually comes way prior to possessing the answer to prayer or seeing the prophecy come to pass.

Thus, I advise learning first from the Bible and pursuing His Kingdom. ‘The Kingdom of God is not meat or drink, but righteousness, peace, and the Holy Ghost.’ This means it is always ready to be attained, accepted, and entered into, as it is due to His great grace. Plus it’s FREE…And each of us who has accepted Jesus as our Savior has been given the potential to enter in if we understand it and are taught about it.”

MAJOR CAPSULE: “The kingdom of GOD is not STUFF, PROVISION, WEALTH, ACCLAIM but “His FRUIT and sustaining power and INNER CALM and REAL FIRST LOVE JOY!

The Deep Inner Back Story of Slave to Ruler Joseph refers to the story of Joseph, one of the sons of Jacob, who was sold into slavery by his own brothers and eventually rose to become the second most powerful man in Egypt. The passage reads:

“He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant: Whose feet they hurt with fetters: he was laid in iron: Until the time that his word came: the word of the Lord tried him. The king sent and loosed him; even the ruler of the people, and let him go free. He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance: To bind his princes at his pleasure; and teach his

THE MAIN PICTURE OF THE SENT JOSEPH “LAID IN IRON UNTIL HIS WORD CAME TO PASS”(tested, tried, ever  always learning, forced into reliance, deep grace  dependence upon the Lord) See below:

“He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant. Whose feet they hurt with fetters; he was laid in iron until the time that his word came. The word of the Lord tested him.”

The king sent and released him, even the ruler of the people, and let him go free. He made Joseph lord of his house and ruler of all his substance, to bind his princes at his pleasure and teach his senators** wisdom.” (**from locked up in chains and leg irons in prison (a big ZERO) to ADVISING THE NATIONAL GOVERNING LEADERS)

AND EVEN MORE

This passage describes the difficult and trying circumstances that Joseph endured before being exalted to a position of power in Egypt. After being sold into slavery by his own brothers, he was taken to Egypt and imprisoned on false charges. However, through his faith in God and his ability to interpret dreams, he was eventually brought before the Pharaoh and given the responsibility of managing the country’s food supply during a time of famine.

AGAIN, it was due to the LORD’S GRACE, PROTECTION, AND EVER PRESENT MERCY on the LONG DIFFICULT BIG  JOURNEY..

The passage also highlights the role that God played in Joseph’s journey. It says that the “word of the Lord tried him,” indicating that God allowed Joseph to go through difficult circumstances in order to refine his character and prepare him for the leadership role he would eventually assume. It also notes that the king of Egypt ultimately recognized Joseph’s talents and set him free to serve in a position of power and authority.

OVERALL AND THROUGH IT ALL,  ENDURING ALL, FORGIVING THEM ALL YET
CAME OUT  IN HIS MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH ..AT LAST…even DESPITE IT ALL!
