People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—having a form of godliness but denying its power.” (2 Timothy 3:1-5)

“They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.” (2 Timothy 3:6-7)

Context and Modern Application

False Leaders Preying on the Vulnerable: In Paul’s time, some teachers manipulated women who were oppressed by guilt and shame from their pasts. Instead of leading them to freedom in Christ, these leaders used spiritual control to manipulate and exploit.
False Teaching and Control: Today, this might manifest in chauvinistic doctrines that portray women as inherently weak, emotionally unstable, or spiritually inferior. These views can lead to emotional and psychological control.
Creating Weak-Willed Women: When a culture continually tells women that they are “less than” or incapable of spiritual discernment, some may begin to believe it. This internalized oppression can cause women to conform to negative stereotypes.

The Disease of Dysfunctional Ministry Culture

In toxic ministry settings, especially those with Levitical Patriarchal leanings, we see the rise of leaders who:

Dominate instead of shepherd. (devoid of healthy relationship regard and respect)
Promote spiritual elitism and false humility.
Maintain control through fear and accusation.
Weaponize doctrines like “headship” to silence women.

This is not reflective of biblical leadership but rather a distortion that enables sinful behavior and protects abusers.

1 Timothy 6:6-8 — Godliness with Contentment

Paul also addresses the issue of false teachers driven by greed and discontentment:

“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.” (1 Timothy 6:6-8)

Modern Application

Ministry as a Means of Gain: Some ministers today operate celebrity ministries that exploit followers for personal wealth. They build platforms through fear-mongering, false prophecy, and divisive accusations.
Consumer Christianity: Some believers are conditioned to seek leaders who promise financial prosperity rather than spiritual maturity. This pursuit often results in disillusionment.
Contentment and Integrity: True spiritual leaders exhibit humility, transparency, and a genuine love for God’s people. They are not driven by personal ambition but by a desire to serve.

The Path to Restoration and Wholeness

To combat these issues, the church must return to a Christ-centered model of leadership and community.

Reject Fear-Based Doctrine: Teach sound biblical truth that uplifts and empowers, especially concerning women’s worth and calling.
Call Out Corruption: Establish systems of accountability for leaders who manipulate and abuse their authority.
Restore the Gospel of Grace: Remind believers that salvation is not based on performance but on Christ’s finished work. Grace brings freedom, not bondage.
Promote Equality in Christ: Recognize that both men and women are made in God’s image and called to lead, teach, and serve.
Heal the Oppressed: Offer support for those who have internalized negative beliefs, helping them reclaim their God-given identity.

If you have the Boys Club (or Girls Club) in society, in business, there’s no place for it in ministry. The boys will be boys is the in club, out club, the clique. Could be the girls club that are affiliated, you know, kind of like the boys. They say, oh, boys will be boys. Mama’s baby boy can do no wrong. That’s part of the chauvinism culture. Ego and false parenting as well as false religion as character. So I’m thinking of Eli, the son, Hophni and Phineas. They were like that. They were raised in that culture. It doesn’t mention the wife of Eli, but those boys were proven ministers. But they were harlot watchers, Jezebel watchers, but they were Jezebels themselves. Describe that for the women, the many women that came to the temple and the money. Describe that in light of now and all races.

The concept of the “boys’ club” is often used to describe a system where a group of men protects each other’s status, privilege, and behavior — even when it’s harmful or unjust. While it’s not a literal club, it’s a mindset and a cultural dynamic that fosters entitlement, favoritism, and a lack of accountability. This toxic spirit can manifest in business, government, and social settings — but it becomes even more dangerous when it infiltrates the church.

Eli, Hophni, and Phinehas: A Biblical Example of Corruption

In 1 Samuel 2:12-17, we read about Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas, who were supposed to serve as priests in the temple. Instead, they abused their spiritual authority:

They exploited the people’s offerings. They forcefully took the best portions of sacrifices meant for God.
They engaged in sexual immorality. The Bible states that they slept with the women who served at the entrance of the tent of meeting (1 Samuel 2:22).
They defiled their office. Rather than representing God with reverence and purity, they used their position for personal pleasure and gain.

Their father Eli failed to discipline them. He rebuked them mildly (1 Samuel 2:23-25), but he did not remove them from office. This unwillingness to act enabled their continued corruption. God judged Eli’s household, declaring that both of his sons would die on the same day and that the priesthood would be stripped from his family (1 Samuel 2:27-36).

The Hophni and Phinehas Spirit Today

Just as Hophni and Phinehas exploited their spiritual positions, we see similar patterns in modern ministries.

Boys’ Club Culture in Ministry
- Favoritism and Nepotism: In some ministries, family connections or personal alliances protect leaders from accountability, even when their actions are abusive.
- Unchecked Sin: Leaders may justify immoral behavior through cover-ups, dismissing victims or spiritualizing their own sin.
- Weaponizing the Jezebel Spirit Accusation: Much like Hophni and Phinehas, who objectified and controlled women, some leaders label outspoken or independent women as “Jezebels” to silence and shame them.
False Masculinity and Chauvinism
- Ego and Power: Some men are raised to believe that their authority is a divine right rather than a sacred responsibility. This fosters entitlement, as in Eli’s sons.
- Mama’s Baby Boy Mentality: This cultural mindset excuses the bad behavior of men while holding women to a higher moral standard. It’s often rooted in false religious views that portray women as temptresses or scapegoats.
- Lack of Accountability: Leaders often protect one another under the guise of “honoring authority” rather than confronting sin with integrity.
The Misuse of Religious Authority
- Manipulative Prophecy and Witch-Hunting: Like the temple sons who misused their authority for personal gain, some leaders today use fear-based teachings to control congregants. Witch lists, subliminal targeting, and gossip prayers create a toxic culture of paranoia and false accusation.
- Blaming Women: Ministries with a Levitical Patriarchy mindset often view women as the root of temptation. This belief is unbiblical and dismisses the responsibility of men to walk in purity and self-control.

The Women at the Temple: Then and Now

The women who served at the entrance of the tent of meeting (1 Samuel 2:22) were likely devoted in their spiritual service. However, rather than honoring their dedication, Hophni and Phinehas saw them as objects of desire.

Similarly, today’s faithful women in ministry often face:

Character Assassination: If a woman is influential, gifted, or bold, she may be accused of operating in a “Jezebel spirit” simply because she doesn’t conform to patriarchal expectations.
Silencing Through Shame: Women who experience harassment or abuse are sometimes blamed rather than supported.
Financial Exploitation: In some settings, women are targeted for financial gain through manipulative appeals for “faith-based giving” without accountability.

Jesus’ Response to Women and Power Abuse

Jesus broke every societal and religious norm that diminished women.

He defended the woman caught in adultery. When the Pharisees tried to stone her, Jesus confronted their hypocrisy, asking, “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone” (John 8:7). The absence of the male counterpart in this accusation mirrored the boys’ club mentality of the time.
He valued women as disciples. Mary sat at Jesus’ feet as a disciple, a position that Jewish culture typically reserved for men (Luke 10:38-42).
He appeared to women first after His resurrection. Women were the first witnesses of the risen Christ, entrusted with proclaiming the Good News (John 20:11-18).

Moving Forward: Breaking the Boys’ Club Mentality

To break free from the Hophni and Phinehas spirit today, the church must:

Promote True Accountability: Establish systems to confront sin and corruption, protecting the vulnerable rather than the powerful.
Empower Women: Recognize and affirm the gifts and callings of women in all areas of ministry.
Confront Misogyny: Teach the true biblical perspective on men and women — equal in value and responsibility, with mutual respect and submission.
Discern False Authority: Refuse to follow leaders who use fear, manipulation, or gender-based control.
Restore the Fear of the Lord: Cultivate reverence for God’s holiness by rejecting sin and walking in humility.

In the end, the church’s health will not be measured by celebrity ministers or outward success but by the presence of justice, mercy, and love. By confronting the boys’ club spirit and embracing true biblical leadership, the body of Christ can reflect God’s heart for all people.
