Paul warned us about this in 2 Timothy 3:1-5, describing a time when people will be “lovers of themselves…boasters, proud, blasphemers…unholy,” and in pursuit of control rather than true relational ministry.

This “WELP” behavior — which many assume is discernment — is often nothing more than a means to avoid genuine connection, choosing instead to project judgments, stereotypes, and labels from afar.

Scriptural Foundations on the Power and Abuse of Spiritual Gifts

The gift of discernment, intended by God as grace, mirrors First Church gifts such as the Word of Wisdom and Word of Knowledge.

It in a sense..it’s about “a kind of TURF Protecting” rather than about Obeying Apostle Paul by Honoring God Through Genuine Community

Genuine community, as described in Ephesians 4:2-3, involves “lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love.” We are called to “endeavour to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Similarly, Paul writes in Ephesians 5:21 that we should “submit ourselves one to another in the fear of God,” seeking unity over division and peace over power.

When Jesus spoke to(related to, respected, valued) the woman at the well, He offered her truth mixed with compassion. His goal was not to condemn but to restore her. However, the WELP culture often appears as a modern-day Pharisee, eager to judge but unwilling to serve. We can learn from Jesus’ example, forsaking a WELP mentality for one of humility, drawing near to the people we serve. Reform and Realignment: Toward a Spirit-Led Community

As the Church, we are called to a higher standard of love, relational respect, and humility. The behaviors of WELP leaders must be identified, reformed, and addressed through genuine biblical principles. In alignment with Isaiah 1:18, we are invited to “reason together” with others, and to choose restoration over condemnation. The Church is meant to be a place of relationship, direct conversation, and unity.

In closing, let us hold fast to 1 John 1:7, walking in the light, and seek to build communities that value love, respect, and godly relationships over the empty power plays of WELP. For where two or three are gathered in His name, He is there — and in His presence, control and judgment have no place in ministry of, the community of those who claim they maturely represent “the Christ”
